MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WSAU) — The Badger men scored once in each period for a 3-2 win over Minnesota in Big Ten play on Friday, completing a weekend sweep of the #1 Golden Gophers.
Sophomore Simon Tassy recorded two goals and assisted on the third to William Whitelaw. Christian Fitzgerald added two assists in the win.
Wisconsin struck first but Minnesota battled back to level the game at 1-1 and 2-2 before Tassy netted the game-winner with about 2:00 remaining in the contest.
Kyle McClellan made 29 saves including 14 in the first period alone to earn the win in goal for the second straight night. Jimmy Clark and Aaron Huglen scored for Minnesota.
Wisconsin is now 4-2-0 all-time when playing a #1 ranked Minnesota squad, including wins in each of the last three such games. It’s also Wisconsin’s first three-game win streak over the Gophers since 2009.
The Badgers continue Big Ten play next weekend with two against Michigan at the Kohl Center. Friday’s game begins at 7 PM, with pregame coverage at 6:30 on WSAU. Minnesota will make a return trip to Madison in early February.
Meanwhile, the Badger women also picked up a win in the Twin Cities with a 5-3 result against the University of St. Thomas. Kristen Simms opened the scoring with two goals in the first before the Tommies battled back to tie the game before the end of the frame. Katie Kotlowski put Wisconsin back on top midway through the second, but once again the Tommies responded to knot the game at 3.
Anna Wilgren and Britta Curl each scored on the power play to provide the winning margin.
Casey O’Brien had three assists. Simms recorded an assist on the game-winner from Wilgren.
Jane Gervais went the distance in net, making 18 saves.
Wisconsin remains unbeaten at 9-0-0, 5-0-0 in WCHA play. The Badgers and Tommies will face off again tonight at UST.
