MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — The legislative joint finance committee has passed a Republican tax cut aimed at workforce development.
The $2 billion package replaced Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ plan to spend part of the state surplus on child care, paid family leave and raises for U W employees.
Whitefish Bay Democrat Deb Andraca called the move ‘partisan’.
“The legislature is basically a game of ping pong these days,” said Andraca. The governor proposes something that Republicans propose something else, and nothing gets done. And I know you’re hearing it from your constituents as well. Everyone is tired of this.”
Madison Democrat Kelda Roys says Republicans are driving off working families.
“They’re not looking at the marginal tax rate of the state income tax. They’re looking at, where are their good schools? Where can their kids go to a great public university with in-state tuition? Where are the good job opportunities? Where can they get childcare?”
The Republican plan cuts the state’s income tax rate, and offers up child care tax rebates and discounts for private schools.
Governor Evers is expected to veto the bill when it reaches him.
