WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenburg will have an opponent in the upcoming mayoral race.
Current District 4 Alderman Doug Diny announced his candidacy for office with supporters and family in attendance on Wednesday in front of the old Wausau East High School. Diny stated that he is yet to begin the process of collecting the 200 signatures needed to appear on the ballot and will start on December 1st.
Diny says that one of his main goals if elected mayor will be to clean up the city streets and fix the city’s spending, saying, “The streets, of course, I didn’t get into detail about the streets, but they are not being kept up with the maintenance on the degradation and a zero tax increase budget one of these days since we haven’t had one in nearly ten years. With the addition of shared revenue and ARPA funds, we should be flush right now, and we’re somehow still coming in with a tax increase.”
When asked about how he would change the current course of the city council as mayor, he said, “It starts with setting the tone for the city council, and we have a pretty good city council, but they do need some restructuring on goals to focus on the core city traditional duties we all grew up with, and once we get behind that, we will be able to get us on a course of action that will get us there.”
Diny has been at the forefront in recent months of criticizing the city’s current development plan for the Foundry on 3rd, and when asked about what those projects would look like with him as mayor, he said, “The number one thing is tighter project management because when you’re running a project, there needs to be communication on a regular basis, and monthly we’re getting updates and sitting down at the table, and as we get closer to crunch time, we should be meeting weekly to know if there are any hiccups or delays.”
If a primary is indeed needed for the race, that will occur on February 20, 2024, and election day will be on April 2nd.
