MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — At the Capitol, conservatives on the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the appropriateness of a lawsuit challenging legislative district maps.
“Everybody knows that the reason we’re here is because there was a change in the membership of the court,” said Justice Rebecca Bradley. “You would not have brought this action right if the newest Justice had lost her election.”
Justice Janet Protesiewicz’s election last November gave the court a 4-3 liberal majority. The lawsuit argues, among other things, that the court’s conservative majority violated separation of powers in 2021 when it adopted maps that had been vetoed by Governor Tony Evers.
If the lawsuit is successful, it will force half of the state Senate to run in new districts in a special election in 2024.
It’s unclear who would draw new maps if the court upholds the lawsuit.
