WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Some old friends will be coming to Athletic Park in Wausau in 2024.
The Wausau Woodchucks will open the Northwoods League season on Monday, May 27th with a game against the Green Bay Rockers in Wausau. The same two teams will play Green Bay’s home opener in Ashwaubenon the next day.
The complete schedule was released on Monday. The Chucks will play 72 games split into two halves. An All-Star break is built into the schedule in late July, with details about the 2024 All-Star Games to be announced later.
Wausau will have a four-game homestand between June 18th and the 21st featuring two games against Lakeshore, one game against Fond du Lac, and one game against Wisconsin Rapids. Another four-game homestand is scheduled for August 5th through the 8th with two games against Kenosha and two games against the Minnesota Mud Puppies, a travel-only team based out of the Twin Cities.
With an unbalanced number of teams in the Great Plains and Great Lakes Divisions, the Northwoods League has announced there will be inter-division play this year. This means the Wausau Woodchucks have added the Eau Claire Express, Duluth Huskies, and Thunder Bay Border Cats to their 2024 slate.
They’ll play many of those teams during a season-long five-game road trip in mid-June. Eau Claire is scheduled to visit Wausau on June 11th and 28th, while Duluth comes to town on the 29th and 30th. Thunder Bay will visit for two in early August.
The remainder of Wausau’s schedule includes games against Kenosha and Madison. The Woodchucks will not play the likes of Kokomo, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, or Rockford this year.
The 2024 NWL structure includes new teams in North Dakota and Michigan. The Great Plains Division has 13 teams, including the Mud Puppies. The Great Lakes Division features 13 teams as well.
Division playoffs will be contested between August 11th and 13th. Division Championship games are scheduled for the 14th, with the one-game League Championship penciled in for the 15th.
Woodchuck ticket information will be released later this winter.
