WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – High school senior Dylan Butler has been identified as the shooter at Perry High School in Iowa, according to local news outlet WHO 13.
According to Reuters, a sixth-grade student was killed on Thursday morning, and five other people, including the school’s principal, were wounded when Butler opened fire at the Iowa school.
Authorities told reporters that they responded to the incident within seven minutes and that Butler “acted alone” and had taken his own life after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Assistant Director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Mitch Mortvedt stated that police found a “rudimentary” improvised explosive device inside the school and that Butler was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun.
The Post Millennial reports that the 17-year-old Butler had a TikTok account with the username “tooktoomuch” that has since been deleted by the platform. The account had a cartoon girl as the profile photo and biography that mainly showed the LGBTQI+ pride flag and other personal hobbies.
Butler posted videos on his account that included drug use and posts about identifying as “genderfluid” and using the pronouns “he/they.” The most alarming content came from a post that showed what appeared to be Butler having a pretend gunfight with an unidentified person.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds released a statement on X saying, “Our hearts are broken by this senseless tragedy. Our prayers are with the students, teachers, and families of the Perry Community. I have been in contact with law enforcement agencies and am continuing to monitor the situation.”
The police have not provided any further comment, and the information surrounding the victims remains a devolving story.
