MOSINEE, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Students were evacuated from Mosinee School District buildings on Thursday afternoon, and won’t be returning on Friday as law enforcement investigates a “bomb threat to the buildings in our district,” according to a statement sent to parents following the incident.
Buildings will be open from 8 AM to 2 PM for parents and students who need to pick up belongings. Those doing so will need to check in at the front office upon arrival.
A copy of the statement was obtained by WAOW TV:
Mosinee Families,
First and foremost we want to thank all families for their flexibility and patience today as we worked through our emergency evacuation and family reunification. Today we received information regarding a bomb threat to the buildings in our district. Student safety is our highest priority which caused us to immediately evacuate the building in conjunction with the local law enforcement. As of right now, law enforcement continues to investigate the incident on the school grounds.
As a result of the immediate nature of our evacuation as well as the investigation ongoing into the night, school will be closed tomorrow, Friday February 2nd, 2024. A decision about after school events will be determined on Friday. We understand that today was a traumatic event for many students as a result we will have counselors on hand upon return to school on Monday to work with any students who may need assistance.
Buildings will be open from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2nd for students and parents to retrieve their belongings. You must check into the front office upon arrival.
Further information will be provided to families and the community about the event as soon as we are able. Please note that Wisconsin State Statute states that bomb threats are considered a felony offense. We will work with local law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable.
Again, thank you for your support and cooperation during this difficult situation.
Sincerely,
Mosinee Administration Team
Law enforcement and emergency responders from multiple jurisdictions were on the scene well into Thursday evening. That included the State Patrol, who had set up a perimeter around the middle and high school complex.
One student who spoke with WAOW TV about the incident described the scene as emotional and chaotic, “I was in math class when all had to evacuate, so there are a lot of emotions and people were crying about what’s gonna happen.”
All students were safely evacuated. District leaders canceled athletic activities for Thursday evening.
Law enforcement officials have yet to comment on the situation.
