MADISON, WI and MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WSAU) — The Wisconsin men’s hockey team was upset 3-1 by Ohio State in Game One of their Big Ten Quarterfinal series on Friday.
The Buckeyes’ Brent Johnson opened the scoring midway through the first, but Wisconsin countered a few minutes later with a goal from William Whitelaw.
The game stayed tied at 1 into the 3rd period when Ohio State’s Max Montes scored a power play goal two minutes into the frame. He would ice the game with two minutes to go on an empty net goal.
Kyle McClellan made 21 saves in the loss.
Wisconsin will need a win on Saturday to force a Game Three. Pregame coverage for Game Two begins at 5:30 PM on WSAU.
Other first-round results from Friday had Michigan defeating Notre Dame 5-4 and Minnesota knocking off Penn State 5-1. All of those series are best-of-three as well.
The Badger women will be playing for the WCHA Final Face-Off title after a 4-3 overtime result against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday.
Casey O’Brien netted a goal in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game to OT at 3 each. Lacey Eden would end it at the 13-minute mark in the extra frame.
Kristen Simms scored twice as well.
Ava McNaughton made 20 saves including ten in the first period to secure the win in net.
In Friday’s other semifinal, Ohio State defeated Minnesota-Duluth 5-0. Wisconsin and Ohio State will meet today at 2:00 for the league title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Hockey National Championship.
The Buckeyes won the season series from the Badgers 3-1.
