HUDSON, WI (WSAU) — A Twin Cities man has been found guilty of stabbing a group of teenagers while tubing on the Apple River in St. Croix County during the summer of 2022.
Jurors determined that Nicholae Miu was the aggressor in the July 2022 incident, during which he produced a knife and stabbed a group as they were passing by on their tubes. His defense team tried to paint the group as the aggressor, saying he acted in self-defense and was looking for a lost cell phone in the river at the time. But the state successfully argued that he was the aggressor, and could have backed off at any time.
The incident killed one person, 17-year-old Isaac Schuman, and injured four others. The victims were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The case went to the jury Wednesday afternoon and the group deliberated for a few hours before calling it a night at about 4:30 PM. They reconvened Thursday morning, and delivered the verdict by noon.
Miu did take the stand in his defense during the eight-day trial.
