WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The recount is complete for Marathon County’s District 16 supervisor seat, finding two additional votes for Bill Conway and none for Tony Sherfinski.
That gives Conway a 257-254 victory in last Tuesday’s election, with the two extra votes going from the “overvote” category into Conway’s total. “Overvotes” are cases where a ballot is marked for more candidates than allowed in a certain race.
In this case, the ballots were partially marked for Sherfinski. When the canvassers met for Friday’s recount, they determined the votes should count for Conway because voters had not completely marked the Sherfinski circle on their ballot.
Clerk Kim Trueblood released images of the two “overvote” ballots that the recount flipped to Conway’s column:
Conway was present for Friday’s recount. Tony Sherfinski was not. Representatives from the Republican Party were also present, according to a sign-in sheet released by Trueblood following the recount.
