WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – A new YouGov poll shows the majority of Americans will not remember the late O.J. Simpson for his football skills.
According to the poll, over 66% of Americans connected Simpson, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76 from prostate cancer to the 1995 murder trial when he was found not guilty of the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, while only 17% of respondents stated they would remember the Heisman Trophy winner for his Hall of Fame NFL career.
These results came out not long after Ron Goldman’s father and sister released a statement on Simpson’s death on Thursday, saying, “The news of Ron’s killer passing away is a mixed bag of complicated emotions and reminds us that the journey through grief is not linear,” and continued by saying, “For three decades we tirelessly pursued justice for Ron and Nicole and despite a civil judgment and his confession in ‘If I Did It,’ the hope for true accountability has ended.” The Goldman’s also stated that Simpson’s death is “no great loss.”
According to YouGov, as of 2024, approximately 61% of US adults believe that Simpson, who allegedly subjected Brown to years of abuse that continued even after their divorce, was the true killer. However, 28% of respondents were unsure, with 11% believing he was not guilty.
