WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – As November continues to approach, voters across the U.S. are speaking out about concerns they have over the issue of illegal immigration that is impacting communities across the country.
According to a recent Axios poll conducted by Harvard/Harris, 51% of Americans, including 42% of Democrats, support mass deportations of illegal immigrants, as do 68% of Republicans and 46% of independents. Another 30% of Democrats as well as 46% of Republicans also say they’d end birthright citizenship.
When broken down by generation, 60% of Boomers supported deportation policies, along with 53% of Gen X and 48% of Millennial voters. As for race, 56% of White respondents supported the policy, while 45% of Latino respondents and 40% of Black respondents said the same.
“I was surprised by the public’s support for large-scale deportations,” said Mark Penn, chairman of The Harris Poll and veteran pollster for President Clinton. “I think they’re just sending a message to politicians: ‘Get this under control,'” he added, describing it as a warning to Biden that “efforts to shift responsibility for the issue to Trump are not going to work.”
When asked to identify their top concerns about illegal immigration, Americans most frequently mentioned increasing crime rates, drugs, and violence (21%), more expenses for taxpayers (18%), and the risk of terrorism and national security (17%).
