Wausau WI, (WSAU)– A 25-year-old man from Madison was found guilty on Friday. He has been convicted of the sexual assault and homicide of a 20-month-old girl, along with the abuse of the child’s mother, who was the man’s girlfriend at the time.
A jury found Marshawn D. Giles guilty of 15 charges on Friday. Giles originally faced 18 criminal counts however 3 were dropped. The charges include first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault of a child resulting in great bodily harm, and second-degree assault.
In 2022, the child died due to blunt force to her head that caused multiple skull fractures. A conducted autopsy also provided that not only were the blunt force injuries on her head, but were also elsewhere showing signs of sexual assault.
Giles’s defensive team stated that Giles was suffering from hallucinations along with other mental health-related issues during the time of the child’s death. The defense is pleading mental defect of these charges and will attempt to showcase that Marshawn was not criminally responsible for his actions at the time of the incident. The second phase of the trial is set to start tomorrow, April 29th.
