STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – On the lawn of Old Main, one of the main paths across campus at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, a couple dozen individuals join their campus counterparts in support of Palestinian liberation.
Students across the Badger State have joined together in support of Palestine, and now that includes students in Central Wisconsin. They’re now a part of the nationwide campus movement that includes UW Madison and Milwaukee.
They’re calling on UWSP and the UW system at large to divest from pro-Israel companies and causes to end the war in the Gaza Strip.
“We are calling for Wisconsin Stevens Point to divest from companies and institutions that promote and profit from the unlawful and discriminatory deaths and occupation in Palestine currently, and the disclosure of all investments the university of Wisconsin system, including this university, Wisconsin stevens point is important,” said Haley Ellenbrecker, an undergraduate student.
UWSP Dean of Students Troy Seppelt told News 9 in a statement that:
“The free exchange of ideas through open dialogue and debate is a hallmark of the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. We support the First Amendment and the right to free expression – including legal protest – and we have been consistent in upholding these ideals […] we expect our students and campus to understand and appreciate those values.”
These aren’t just students joining the movement at UWSP. The demonstration is open to community members as well, organizers say anyone who wants to come and join them is welcome to.
