GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has found its next men’s basketball head coach following the departure of Sundance Wicks.
According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Fox Sports Radio host and NCAA March Madness analyst Doug Gottlieb has emerged as a “series candidate” for UWGB’s open head coaching vacancy, and barring any unexpected setbacks the university will make the move official as soon as Tuesday afternoon.
Gottlieb, a Wisconsin native, is the son of former UW-Milwaukee head coach Bob Gottlieb, who coached the Panthers from 1975 to 1980 and went 97-91 during his career as a head coach. His only coaching experience came during the 2009 and 2017 Maccabiah Games, where he helped coach Team USA to a gold medal while also winning a gold medal as a player. Gottlieb told reporters afterward that it’s “more special to win as a coach.” Gottlieb was an accomplished college player, leading the NCAA in assets during his senior year at Oklahoma State. He finished second in the nation in assists per game at 8.6 and received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors that season.
Green Bay’s former coach, Sundance Wicks, announced over the weekend that he was leaving the program to be the head coach at his alma mater the University of Wyoming on a five-year deal. Wicks was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2023 after leading the Phoenix to an 18-14 record after the program won just three games in 2022.
