Wausau Woodchucks
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Woodchucks scored twice in the 8th to secure a 7-5 victory over Green Bay on opening day.
Drew Berkland and Elijah Alexander each recorded two hits in the game. Berkland added two runs and three RBI, two of which came on the game-winning home run to left field in the 8th.
Starter Garrett Brogdon opened the game with two strikeouts but then struggled, allowing the next seven batters to get on base. He was charged with four earned runs and nine walks. James Mann came on in relief to end the inning.
Wausau would return the favor in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs including an RBI single from Jeremy Conforti and four RBI walks.
The first inning saw both teams put up nine combined runs and work nine walks at the plate. It took 45 minutes from the first pitch to the last out.
From there the game settled down with Mann throwing two scoreless innings before allowing one additional Rockers run in the 4th. Chris Paruleski followed that with three scoreless innings of his own. Edwin Alicea (1-0) earned the win by throwing a clean 8th thanks to three strikeouts.
The two sides played through several short rain showers, though the game was never officially delayed by the umpires.
Wausau and Green Bay will play again Tuesday in Ashwaubenon for the Rockers’ home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
