MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers had two players earn National League honors on Monday following their strong homestead, where the team won six out of seven games against the White Sox and Cubs.
According to the team, third baseman Joey Ortiz has been named the National League Rookie of the Month, while shortstop Willy Adames has also been named the National League Player of the Week.
Ortiz, who was part of the Orioles’ return package for ace pitcher Corbin Burnes, becomes the Brewers’ first Rookie of the Month winner since Keston Hiura in 2019, and when asked about the honor, he told MLB.com, “It’s definitely not something I expected. I was just trying to do my best and do my job out there, worrying about helping the team win. That’s really, honestly, what matters. The accolades are cool, but I just want to do what I can to put the team in a good position.”
Ortiz is batting .293 so far this season with five home runs and 21 RBIs and has been red hot over the last seven days, totaling eight hits in 24 at-bats that included four doubles and three RBIs to only two strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Adames has seen similar numbers over the last week, hitting .385 over that span, getting ten hits in 26 at-bats, scoring seven times, and knocking in ten RBIs. Adames also hit a key walk-off line drive during Milwaukee’s Saturday afternoon win against the Chicago White Sox.
The Brewers return to action on Monday as they travel to Philadelphia to face Zack Wheeler and the Phillies. The first pitch can be heard on WSAU at 5:40.
