PLOVER, WI (WSAU) – One of Wisconsin’s all-time great hockey players is stepping away from the game after 18 seasons in the NHL.
According to ESPN’s Ryan Clark, Plover native and former San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars forward Joe Pavelski is stepping away from the league. Following the Stars’ Western Conference Finals 2-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday, Pavelski reportedly stated, “This is it for me.”
Pavelski has not made an official announcement on his future but has previously acknowledged that he expected the 2023–2024 season to be his last as he turns 40 in July and his contract with Dallas is set to end, making him an unrestricted free agent after five years with the organization.
If Sunday’s game was indeed his last, his career will include many accolades, such as holding the record for the most playoff goals by an American player (74) and winning a silver medal with Team USA during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Before his professional career, Pavelski helped deliver SPASH a Wisconsin State Hockey Championship, and the Wisconsin Badgers an NCAA Championship in 2006, leading the team in overall points.
