WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny is hoping that the mild winter will translate to more street work this summer.
Diny will be proposing a measure to allow the city to transfer funds budgeted for snow removal earlier this year to asphalt overlay projects later this summer, allowing the city to get further ahead in some neighborhoods than originally planned.
“We would really take it from one bucket of street maintenance and move it into asphalt overlay,” said Diny. “That allows us to get more mileage done.”
The proposal comes at the perfect time after the city purchased a roller, which allows them to do those projects in-house. It’s unclear what streets would be prioritized this summer, but Diny says that is based on the condition of the road and the amount of use it gets, meaning roads with more traffic will go to the top of the list.
The plan would include saving some of the money just in case December brings more than average snowfall. “We will not spend it to zero, but it’s safe to say the bulk of the spending, maybe 75% we would be able to move. We’ll keep some for the end of the year.”
Diny says he won’t be able to put the work in motion unilaterally. The transfer will require the city council’s approval. It’s unclear when he will bring the proposal to the alders for consideration.
