WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – After years of growth and program building, the Marathon County United U16 girl’s soccer squad has qualified for nationals in Wichita for the first time.
MCU is a member of the Central Wisconsin Soccer League (CWSL), comprised of teams from Eagle River, Marshfield, Minocqua, Mosinee, Rhinelander, Stevens Point, Waupaca, Wausau, and Wisconsin Rapids, with players hailing from the Wausau, D.C. Everest, Medford, Antigo, Colby, Marathon, Edgar, Merrill, Tomahawk, Rhinelander, and Mosinee school districts.
Center-mid Megan Foster spoke about the opportunity to play on the national stage, saying, “We’re really showing who we really are,” and “Everyone is like, ‘Oh, they’re a small town, they’re not going to do anything.’ They’ll see us and say, ‘Oh, we’re playing MC United. What even is that?”
Head Coach Melissa Kampmann says despite the odds, MC United was able to make history, saying, “If you look at a lot of the other soccer programs in the state of Wisconsin, they pull in 100 to 150 girls to every single tryout. We get maybe 25 or 30 kids in a tryout. Nobody from central Wisconsin has ever made it to nationals.”
MC United U16 will play three games of group play each day from July 12–14, and if they move on, the semifinals will take place on the 15th, then the finals on the 16th.
