The Wausau City Council will hold a committee discussion on homelessness issues Monday evening.
The agenda calls for an informational presentation on work currently in progress on the issue. That’s followed by discussion and brainstorming over what else can be done at the city level to curb the issue.
The meeting comes three months after the City Council voted to hire two additional police officers, creating a specialized unit focusing on issues created by homelessness. The council voted to organize and schedule the meeting back in May at the request of Alders Gary Gisselman and Terry Kilian.
The issue has been a hot-button topic in recent months with downtown stakeholders saying the issue has disrupted business.
Monday’s discussion will be held in committee of the whole format, meaning no formal action can be taken. The Council can recommend further committee discussion, which could come back to the Council for action at a future meeting.
The discussion and presentation are scheduled for 6:00 PM, or immediately after Monday’s Public Health and Safety Committee meeting. A live stream will be available on YouTube as well.
