WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – Khaled Ahmed al-Dandal, an ISIS leader who had previously assisted five members of the terrorist group in escaping from a Syrian jail facility, was apprehended by U.S. and Syrian military forces on Sunday.
Days after five ISIS foreign terrorists broke out of the Raqqah Detention Facility, US forces working with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested Al-Dandal, according to US Central Command. The SDF also apprehended two individuals who had escaped from this prison: Muhammad Noh Muhammad, a Libyan, and Imam Abdulwahed Akhwan, a Russian, while the three others are still at large.
“Over 9,000 ISIS detainees remain in over 20 SDF detention facilities in Syria, a literal and figurative ‘ISIS Army’ in detention. If a large number of these ISIS fighters escaped, it would pose an extreme danger to the region and beyond. We will continue to work with the international community to repatriate these ISIS fighters to their countries of origin for final adjudication,” Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla said in a statement in a post on X.
Terrorists with ties to ISIS threatened attacks during Taylor Swift’s performances in Austria last month which led her to cancel the events. Moreover, ISIS took responsibility for a mass stabbing attack that occurred last week in the German city of Solingen that left three dead and eight wounded.
