WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Matt Zacher used this week’s Mayors Monday to announce a development that the city has been waiting four years to hear.
The former Verso paper mill will be coming down.
Zacher says the city has reached a deal with Capital Recovery Group and others to work with Milwaukee-based MRD Group to demolish the building. Asbestos abatement is already underway, and Zacher expects that the group will recycle as much of the building as they can including concrete and steel fixtures.
Zacher noted that the negotiations were lengthy and involved lawyers on both sides.
Once demolition is complete the site will feature more than 200 acres of developable land with access to rail and the city’s robust power and gas infrastructure. Zacher expects that the land will be marketed for potential industrial uses at the state and national level.
