FOND du LAC, WI (WSAU) — After a months-long investigation, Law enforcement in Fox Vally believes they have uncovered a massive deer poaching ring.
Investigators believe the group- four teenagers and a 36-year-old female, were involved. The group may have killed more than 100 animals over 15 months from Spring 2023 to last July.
The suspects are accused of spotlighting and shooting the animals from vehicles or striking the animals with a vehicle, and then leaving the carcass behind. Some bucks had their heads removed.
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt described the acts as “senseless, reckless, and indiscriminate.” Possible charges against them include intentional mistreatment of animals, hunting deer with artificial light, hunting deer outside of the designated season, and unauthorized taking of a live animal from the wild.
Charges are being recommended in Fond du Lac and Washington Counties.
The Wisconsin DNR and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office were both involved in the investigation. Names of those involved have not been released.
