Marathon County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Telephone Scam

WAUSAU, WI — The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a telephone scam.

Several residents say they’ve received calls from someone claiming to be a sworn officer, demanding money to pay off an outstanding warrant or to avoid arrest.

Officers note that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever contact you over the phone to demand payment or threaten you with arrest if you don’t pay.

Anyone who receives one of these calls is encouraged to hang up and contact the sheriff’s office directly if you have questions.
