MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers are making one last attempt to retain one of their biggest stars before free agency begins later this month.
According to a press release by the team, the Brewers have extended a qualifying offer to 29-year-old star shortstop Willy Adames worth $21.05 million, which would keep him Milwaukee for the 2025 season, and will need to either accept or decline the offer by 3 p.m. on November 19th.
If Adames were to sign elsewhere for more than $50 million per year, the Brewers would receive a pick at the end of the first round in next summer’s 2025 MLB Draft.
When owner Mark Attanasio was asked about Adames’ future during his end-of-season press conference, he said, “[Adames] and Robin [Yount] are probably the two greatest shortstops to play here and a cherished part of our history. We’re appreciative of everything [Adames] has done here. He is going to get an enormous free agent contract, and I’m very happy for him and his family. We’ll give it our best shot, but there are a lot deeper pockets out there.”
One of only four primary shortstops in modern Major League history to reach 30 home runs, 100 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases in a season, Adames started 161 regular-season games in 2024 and finished with 32 home runs, 112 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases.
