CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) What if the election is THIS close?
Imagine Kamala Harris pulls out narrow victories in Michigan, Georgia, and Wisconsin. Trump wins Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Those results are probable. If the rest of the map holds true: the election would come down to the states that divide their electoral votes by congressional districts; Trump would likely win one of the districts in Maine – Harris would win on of the districts, Omaha, in Nebraska. Under that scenario, Trump would win the Electoral College 271 to 267 – a margin of four electors.
Trust me, all hell would break loose.
Democrats would immediately try to flip two electors, which would send the race to the House of Representatives. In some states, electors must vote for whom they are pledged to. In other states, so called faithless-electors are allowed. I could easily imagine Democrats publishing the names and addresses of the electors. They’d surround their houses and do anything possible to keep them from getting to Washington DC.
In some states, if an elector dies or is killed before the electoral college meets – they can be replaced by an alternate of the candidate’s choosing. In other states, the governor or the legislature picks the elector.
I can very easily imagine such extra curricular activity taking place.
No doubt that there will be certain states where the vote totals will be very close. Donald Trump supporters will watch nervously as his lead dwindles as big-blue cities count and report their votes in the days after voting ends.
What I hope for is a decisive result tonight. Are we a fundamentally center-right nation where people provide for themselves? Or have we become a liberal hand-out country where people expect college loan forgiveness and government money for downpayments on our homes? At some point there will be a fork in the road for our country and the citizens will need to choose a path. I’m doubtful that we’ll make such a choice tonight.
