CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – There are many people who were praying for Donald Trump to win this week. Others prayed for Kamala Harris.
I tend not to pray for specific candidates, even those who I support.
I find myself praying for different things:
“God, please give us free and fair elections – without cheating.”
“God, may the results be decisive, so that supporters of winning and losing candidates can accept the outcome.”
“God, whoever wins, may people still be the masters of their government instead of the government mastering the people.”
“God, may those who are picked for elected office look towards your wisdom as they make their policy choices.”
And “God, I am grateful that we live in a nation where people pick their leaders.”
I’ve been thinking more about the Pioneers’ Prayer or the Wagon Train Prayer. In the early 1800s Americans set out to the Great Plains or to cross the Rocky Mountains. As they looked out at the land before them, no one would pray for a handout – there were none to be had. They would instead offer up a prayer of self-reliance. “God, I give thanks that you’ve led me safely to this place. Thank you for the fertile land you’ve set before me. Give me strength and good health to build a home and to grow a crop. Bless me with family and good neighbors to help. May the weather be mild. And that I may be thankful for the opportunities that your hand provides.”
I don’t think Jesus is a democrat or a republican. Only a small god is confined to the box of politics.
The strength of our nation is not in whether the elephants or the donkeys are in charge. We get to pick between them again in a few short years. Revival for our nation comes outside of our politics; it comes from within our hearts.
