SPRING BROOK, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A suspect has been taken into custody in relation to a cold case murder that occurred in Western Wisconsin in 1974.
On Thursday, the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office said that 84-year-old Jon K. Miller was taken into custody and faces first-degree murder charges in relation to Mary K. Schlais’ murder.
Schlais, who was from Minneapolis, was discovered fatally stabbed on February 15, 1974, in the Township of Spring Brook, close to the intersection of 408th Ave and 990th St. The initial investigation found that she was hitchhiking to a Chicago art show and an eyewitness reported seeing a suspect and a car they thought were related to her murder.
At Ramapo College in New Jersey, a group of genetic genealogists started collaborating with the Dunn County Sheriff’s Officers. They identified Miller as a suspect with the use of more technological advancements. He was arrested in Owatonna, Minnesota and his extradition to Wisconsin is still pending.
