MADISON, WI (WSAU) – A former NFL coach working with the Wisconsin Badgers was arrested over the weekend after Madison police believed he was driving while under the influence.
According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Jack Del Rio, who is serving as a senior advisor to head coach Luke Fickell, was arrested on Friday night in Madison after he “showed signs of impairment.” Police stated that no one was injured after Del Rio had crashed into a street sign and fence before being arrested.
In a press release, the university said that they take “matters like this very seriously, and we are continuing to gather information.”
Del Rio announced on Monday afternoon that he would be resigning from the Senior Advisor position effective immediately saying, “It’s a tough situation, decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for.”
Fickell hired Del Rio during the off-season to bring another “unique” set of eyes to his staff in the film room, as he’s coached at the professional level for more than 25 years and most recently spent 2020-2023 as the Defensive Coordinator of the Washington Commanders.
