MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The latest Associated Press college basketball poll has moved the Wisconsin Badgers into the nation’s top 20 after their 103-88 upset win at Kohl Center over former 9th-ranked Arizona, while the Marquette Golden Eagles remain in the top 15.
According to the poll, the Badgers will begin their first week in the rankings as the 19th overall team in the nation due to off-season transfer John Tonje scoring 41 points to seal the win over the Wildcats, nearly beating former Badger star Frank Kaminsky’s record of 43 points in the team’s 103-85 win over North Dakota in 2014.
Tonje was 21 for 22 at the foul line and shot 8 for 14 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, while forward John Blackwell added another 14 points during the team’s win over Arizona.
Meanwhile, the Marquette Golden Eagles will stay at 15th overall after their 78-74 win over the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday night. The Golden Eagles were led by star point guard Kam Jones, who scored 18 of his 28 points in the 4th quarter, while fellow guard Stevie Mitchell also contributed 18 points.
The Golden Eagles will play one of their biggest games of the season on Tuesday night when they welcome the 6th-ranked Purdue Boilermakers to Milwaukee with a tip-off set for 7 p.m. CST on FS1, while the Badgers will host the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros in Madison on Monday night. Pre-game will begin at 6:30 p.m. CST on WSAU.
