CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Something you should remember about Sean Duffy. He has excellent political instincts.
How good?
On June 16, 2015 Donald Trump descended the golden escalator and announced his candidacy. Sean Duffy quickly identified Trump as the likely Republican nominee. That was by no means obvious. There were 17 candidates in the running back then. One by one Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, and Scott Walker fell by the wayside. Sean Duffy’s choice took on and defeated all challengers.
This week, Trump asked Duffy to join his cabinet as Transportation Secretary.
I am delighted that Duffy is reentering the political arena.
I’ve talked on-air many times about drafting Sean Duffy to be our next Governor. If he ran, he would easily defeat Tony Evers. Duffy would be a next-level candidate, far above Tim Michaels from the 2022 election cycle.
Normally, it’s difficult to leap from congressman to a state-wide office like governor. Voters in only one part of the state, Wausau and the northwoods, know him well. But Duffy is obviously intelligent and camera-ready from his work as a Fox News contributor. Being a Trump cabinet member gives him a higher profile.
The biggest challenge to a Sean-Duffy-for-Governor campaign is that he and his family live in New Jersey. He has six children at home. Duffy’s wife Rachel is also a successful Fox host. He would have to reestablish residency in Wisconsin and it’s not an easy household to uproot.
But by accepting a cabinet position, Duffy signals that he still has an appetite to serve in politics. Mark my words, if his name is ever on a ‘Duffy for Governor’ lawn sign, he’ll win.
