MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin was kept off the scoreboard until midway through the 3rd quarter as Minnesota ran away with Paul Bunyan’s Axe 24-7 on Friday afternoon.
Minnesota took a 14-0 lead at half then stretched that to three scores when Jameson Geers hauled in a 15-yard touchdown from Max Brosmer. Wisconsin responded with a 15-yard scoring play of their own when Braedyn Locke hit Vinny Anthony II to cap an 11-play, 65-yard drive.
Nathanial Vakos nailed the extra point. But on the next possession, he pushed a 37-yard kick to start the 4th quarter.
Locke finished the day 15-32 for 130 yards and one touchdown against no interceptions and two sacks. Tawee Walker was the leading rusher with 36 yards on 14 carries.
Trech Kekahuna recorded six catches for 64 yards. Anthony II caught four balls for 39 yards.
Minnesota controlled the game from the start, outgaining the Badgers 374-166 and picking up 21 first downs to 12. The Gophers held the ball for nearly 36 minutes.
Wisconsin falls to 5-7 and ends the season on a five-game losing streak.
The loss also keeps Wisconsin from reaching the six-win mark and bowl eligibility, meaning a run of more than 20 straight bowl games is in danger of ending. Wisconsin does have a path to a game if there aren’t enough “bowl-eligible” teams through the Academic Progress Rate ranking.
Wisconsin is 3rd on that list. This means if there are not enough teams to fill all 82 bids required for the 41 games Wisconsin could be selected.
Bowl bids will be announced following Conference Championship weekend.
