STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Mayor Mike Wiza says 2024 was the year of housing in Stevens Point.
The city completed numerous projects from high-end housing to affordable units. But one project stands out to him- the Monroe House. “They will provide transitional housing and support- whatever that is,” said Wiza. “[That could mean] job retraining, help filling out a resume, help finding a job, or help with mental health or chemical dependency issues.”
The house will have room for about 20 people at a time. He says that doesn’t make it the be-all end-all solution to homelessness, but it can help. “Nothing will solve [homelessness.] We have had it since the dawn of time and will continue to have it because some people choose that lifestyle. But there are a lot of us who are at risk, one or two paychecks away from being in a situation we don’t want to be in. This helps.
“What’s the saying? Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. That’s what this is,” added Wiza. “This provides stability. You have a home to go to so you can focus on the other things.”
Cash donations to the Monroe House can be made through their website, click here for more information. Donations can be made through PayPal or by debit/credit card. The website also contains the application for admission into the Monroe House program.
