WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – A staffer working for a Democratic U.S. Congressman was arrested on Monday morning after he attempted to bring ammunition into the U.S. Capitol complex.
According to the Post Millennial, a staff member identified as Michael Hopkins, 38, of New York’s 25th Assembly District Congressman Joe Morelle’s (D-NY) team, was arrested by Capitol Police after a high-capacity magazine was found in his possession while trying to get through the x-ray scanners located at the entrance of the complex.
In a statement to Rochester First, Rep. Morelle said, “This morning, our office was informed that a member of our staff was arrested by Capitol Police. We are currently gathering more information regarding the circumstances of the arrest. Our office is fully committed to cooperating with the investigation. As Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, Congressman Morelle is devoted to ensuring a safe and secure workplace for all.”
Hopkins faces a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition, and a court date is yet to be announced while the future of his position on Rep. Morelle’s staff remains uncertain.
