WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — After more than a year of speculation and discussion, the owners of the Wausau Woodchucks have officially announced their entry into the Northwoods League Softball circuit.
The club will begin play next summer as the fifth NWL Softball team. It will play a 42-game season, including 21 home games at Atheltic Park.
Brianne Barta, who previously served as the Assistant General Manager for the Woodchucks, will lead the new team as their General Manager. “I’m very excited to see Brianne enter this leadership role,” said Mark Macdonald, the Wausau Woodchucks and the Softball Club owner in a press release. “Over the past three years Brianne has distinguished herself with her intelligence, creativity, hard work and genuine interest in the sports entertainment business. She will be a great person to lead us as we bring high level women’s sports entertainment to Central Wisconsin.”

Current NWL softball clubs include the Madison Night Mares, La Crosse Steam, Mankato Habaneros, and Minot Honeybees. The Habaneros won the inaugural season with a record of 31-11. There were no playoffs for the first season.
The team will operate in the same manner as the Woodchucks. The roster will consist of college players who still have eligibility remaining. They’ll stay with host families throughout the summer while taking advantage of the opportunity to hone their skills and play more competitive innings.
For now, the team will be known as the Wausau Softball Club. A name-the-team contest will begin on Tuesday. Full-season, half-season, and select mini-ticket plans are on sale now through the Woodchucks ticket office by calling 715-845-5055.
