MAGDEBURG, GERMANY (WSAU) – On Friday afternoon, a vehicle drove through a crowded Christmas market in Germany, killing almost a dozen people and injuring many more.
The accused driver has been arrested though their identity has not yet been made public and authorities believe the act was planned to be terroristic, according to German news site MDR Sachsen-Anhalt.
“This is a terrible event, particularly now in the days before Christmas,” Saxony-Anhalt Gov. Reiner Haseloff told the outlet.
The number of casualties is unknown; however, authorities have verified that at least one person was killed in the attack. According to unverified reports from the region, the suspect is a man from Saudi Arabia and at least 11 people have died while up to 80 have been injured.
This comes less than a decade after a similar attack occurred in Berlin on December 19, 2016, when an Islamic terrorist used a truck to drive through a crowd of people attending the Christmas market, killing 13 people and injuring dozens of others.
