MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Children’s Hospital of Milwaukee is receiving criticism from parents and families online after a local non-profit claimed their toy donation was declined because the term “blessings” appears in their name.
According to a post on Facebook by Brecken’s Blessings, which is a non-profit named after Brecken William, who passed away from congenital heart disease last July and raises money and awareness for children and families affected by congenital heart disease (CHD), the Children’s Hospital denied their donation due to their policy not allowing them to work with or accept donations from groups with a religious affiliation. The Children’s Hospital of Milwaukee has yet to provide a statement or comment on the matter.
“It has been brought to my attention that our 3rd annual Christmas toy drive donations will not be accepted by the hospital because of our sticker logo having the word “blessings” in it. Therefore, Breckens “blessings” can be perceived as a religious affiliation that goes against their policies,” the post read.
“This hurts my heart, and I’ve spent a lot of the morning crying about it. I wanted to be honest and transparent with everyone who donated a toy with the intention of it going to the hospital. Although the donations aren’t going to the hospital, we have decided to donate the toys to other local organizations such as Life Connections and the women’s shelter that we know will still have a positive impact on families in need,” the post continued.
