MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Former Wisconsin State Senators George Petak and Tim Cullen died this week.
Petak died Tuesday at 75 after a long illness. Petak cast the deciding vote in 1995 that created a 0.1% stadium sales tax for Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties that led to the construction of Miller Park. Many people believe that without Petak changing his vote, the tax plan would not have passed and the Brewers may have left Milwaukee.
His constiuents in Racine were not pleased and Petak was ousted from the Senate in a recall election.
Cullen, a former Democratic majority leader, died at 80 after developing a heart condition. He represented the Janesville area for 16 years. He also served as Secretary of Health and Social Services under Republican Governor Tommy Thompson.
Cullen also worked to end gerrymandering in the state and battled for fair election district maps.
