STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) – A local business is making another donation to help those affected by last year’s Maui wildfires.
According to a press release from Sentry Insurance, which has a unique bond with Maui and has been the title sponsor of The Sentry PGA Golf Tournament since 2017, the company gave an extra $1 million to the Maui United Way on New Year’s Eve to help families and children impacted by the natural disaster.
This latest donation brings the company’s total to over $3 million after Sentry donated $377,616 to the Maui Food Bank and Maui United Way in September of 2023, on top of the business giving $250,000 to the Maui Food Bank and $200,000 to the Maui United Way during the COVID-19 crisis.
Sentry Insurance Foundation Executive Director Kalynn Pempek spoke about the latest donation in the release: “So far, they’ve (Maui United Way) served 5,000 children and families and referred about 80 of those children for more intense therapy or counseling. So we know the approach has been working, and the need continues.”
The Hawaiian Island wildfire claimed the lives of 102 people, destroyed over 2,200 buildings, and caused losses exceeding $5 billion. According to a report by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the catastrophic fire was caused by broken utility lines.
