The Wausau School Board meets Wednesday evening for a final presentation on a recommendation to close four elementary schools.
The plan includes closing Hewitt-Texas, Hawthorne Hills, Grant, and Lincoln Elementary Schools. Nearby elementary schools would absorb those students.
Lincoln Elementary would become a district-wide 4K location. Other buildings would be repurposed or sold.
Data presented by the task force shows the district already has 1,100 empty seats between 13 elementary schools. That number is expected to grow to 1,300 by 2027 with no action.
Additionally, two of the schools slated for closure are in areas with no planned residential developments (Hewitt-Texas and Hawthorne Hills).
To accommodate the expected crowd, the meeting will take place at the East High School Theater. The presentation begins at 5:30 PM, and the board will then consider public and student comments before a final decision.
For those who can’t attend the meeting, there will be a live stream on the district’s YouTube channel. It should be noted that the meeting only relates to the Elementary Task Force’s findings. There will be no discussion around a potential operating referendum, that will likely be agendized for Monday, January 13th.
