WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Two Wisconsin congressmen have joined a coalition of fellow Republican representatives seeking to ban DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) from being used to hire federal government employees and staff.
According to a press release, Congressmen Tom Tiffany and Glenn Grothman reintroduced the FAIR Act (the Fairness, Anti-Discrimination, and Individual Rights Act) on Thursday, which would prevent federal agencies, contractors, states, universities, and private entities that receive federal funding from giving preferences based on race or sex. Other co-sponsors for the bill include former NFL player and Utah congressman Burgess Owens, New York’s Claudia Tenney, Wyoming’s Harriet Hageman, Tennessee’s Andy Ogles, Illinois’s Mary Miller, Texas’s Randy Weber, and Alabama’s Barry Moore.
“If we want to put an end to discrimination in the United States, the first step is for the government to end its own discriminatory practices,” said Congressman Tiffany. “The FAIR Act prioritizes merit, delivers on President Trump’s promise to end DEI policies, and ensures fairness by eliminating race-based preferences in the federal government.”
“I know what racism looks like because I witnessed it during my childhood in the Jim Crow South. That’s why I’ve been so appalled over the past four years, as the Biden administration pushed for race-based divisions. No matter how it’s presented, preference under the banner of equity is just plain racism. The FAIR Act reflects a belief I’ve held my entire life: success comes from merit and hard work, not the color of your skin. The federal government must lead by example, promoting unity and opportunity through a commitment to equal treatment for every single American,” said Congressman Owens.
Federal personnel who work on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and initiatives were the subject of one of President Trump’s first executive orders since taking office this week. Leaders were instructed by a document from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to put all employees in DEI roles on paid leave by Wednesday at 5 p.m.
