GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – As football fans react and prepare to watch the Kansas City Chiefs attempt to become the first team in the Super Bowl Era to win three straight NFL championships, some Packers writers and fans have been quick to point out that the accomplishment wouldn’t be the first or second time that the feat has been done in NFL history.
According to Packers writer J.E. Barnett, who wrote a piece about the history of the Green Bay Packers back in September before the Chiefs’ pending historic run, he pointed toward the fact that the Green Bay Packers are the only NFL team in league history so far to win three straight NFL titles, having done it twice (1929-31 and 1965-67).
Following Kansas City’s victory over Buffalo in the AFC Championship, Barnett’s article went viral on social media on Sunday night, garnering over 17,000 views on X alone after CBS announcer Jim Nance said during the broadcast that the Chiefs would be “heading to New Orleans to explore the opportunity to reach a level that’s never been seen before in the history of the NFL,” referring to their Super Bowl streak without considering the Packers’ two three-peats.
The Packers themselves posted on X with the caption “We know a thing or two about a three-peat” with a link to another article written by Packers Team Historian Cliff Christl, who cited a piece by Yahoo Sports’ AM’s Kendall Baker and Jeff Tracy in February 2024, which also falsely claimed that the Chiefs would be the first team in league history to three-peat saying, “Travis Kelce and Andy Reid both confirmed they’ll be back next season as Kansas City tries to become the NFL’s first three-peat champs.”
The Super Bowl Era began in 1966, and Barnett argued that if other professional sports leagues stopped counting championships before the mid-1960s, many other historic organizations’ records would be forgotten, including the New York Yankees, who have 27 total world championships, including four in a row from 1936 to 1939 and five in a row from 1949 to 1953. Only the Oakland Athletics, who won three titles in a row from 1972 to 1974, and the Boston Red Sox, who won three championships in four years from 1915 to 1918, have come close to matching the Yankees’ winning streaks.
The Boston Celtics also have 18 total NBA titles and won eight in a row from 1959 until 1966, a streak that is yet to be beaten in NBA history, with the Chicago Bulls being the closest to ever doing it, winning three in a row from 1991 until 1993 and again from 1996 until 1998. The Los Angeles Lakers, who have 17 total championships and have won back-to-back titles a few times, have never won three in a row.
The NFL celebrated its 100th anniversary back in 2020 and acknowledged Packers players who were members of those past three-peat teams, such as Don Hutson, Sammy Baugh, Jack Christiansen, and former coach and founder Curly Lambeau, who never played or coached in a Super Bowl but were all named to the NFL All-100 team.
Green Bay will host the 2025 NFL draft, and visitors will be able to see the Packers’ Hall of Fame and scoreboard at Lambeau Field for themselves, both of which display the Packers’ three-peats, including championship rings from those seasons, such as their Super Bowl Two ring, which features three diamonds representing the Packers’ 1965–1967 titles.
