CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – This Sunday is an important day for me. I will be baptized into the Christian faith.
I was Christened as a child. It has become my belief that baptism is intended for adults as a full acceptance of Jesus Christ. A child is incapable of making such a decision. Being baptized as an adult is following Christ’s example. Jesus was baptized when he was around 30 years old.
John The Baptist called people to be baptized in the Jordan River. He called for a repentance of sin, and to make straight the path for the lord. And that is my intention on Sunday. I repent of my sins and shortcomings; the things I have done and have left undone. And I would like to prepare the way for Jesus’ light and teachings to shine in our troubled world. In the year ahead I intend to take on more of a leadership in my church, The Cross. Church leaders must be baptized by their own free will as adults.
I have two other thoughts about my own baptism. First, it was intended from the earliest days of Christianity to be a public declaration of faith. Others are supposed to see you becoming a full member of Jesus’ church. Second, you may ask if I’m a little old for this. I’m 55 now. My answer is absolutely not. I stand before everyone as an example that God’s gifts, and all of His grace, are available to anyone at any stage of life.
I ask you to please hold me in prayer as I prepare to be baptized this Sunday.
