Wisconsin Badgers
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WSAU) — Things started well for the Badger men’s hockey team on Friday in a matchup of Top 20 teams.
Simon Tassy and Ryland Mosley scored to give Wisconsin a 2-0 lead on Minnesota 12 minutes into the first period, but that lead would evaporate by the end of the second. Minnesota scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory.
That tear included two goals by Minnesota’s Brodie Ziemer. Tommy Scarfone made 23 saves, allowing four goals before being pulled late in the 3rd for an extra attacker.
The result secures the season series for Minnesota as the Gophers swept Wisconsin in their first meeting back in November with a pair of 3-2 results. Wisconsin will try to salvage one game out of the four tonight in Minneapolis. Face-off is at 5 PM, though there will be no coverage on WSAU due to Badger basketball.
In Duluth, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team defeated the Bulldogs 2-1 in overtime thanks to goals from Marianne Picard and Kristen Simms.
Ava McNaughton made 27 saves including 12 in the second period.
The two sides skated to a 1-1 score after one. Neither side budged for the remainder of the game. Simms netted the game-winner with just over 30 seconds to go in OT to secure the extra standings point.
UMD and Wisconsin will play again this afternoon.
With 62 points, the Badgers have already clinched home ice for the WCHA first-round playoff series in three weeks.
