WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – President Donald Trump is expected to travel to Moscow this spring to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and attend an annual parade commemorating Russia and the Allies’ victory over the Axis powers during World War II.
According to sources who spoke to French news outlet Le Point, the two leaders are expected to discuss a peace deal during the visit, which may bring an end to the war in Ukraine that has devastated the region for more than three years.
President Trump sent a special envoy, led by Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, to Saudi Ariba earlier this week to begin the peace talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and other Kremlin officials as the two nations believe there are “economic and investment opportunities” that can be made between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine once peace is established.
No Ukrainian or European Union officials were present at the meeting. However, France’s President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Tuesday evening that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio did call his French, Italian, British, and German counterparts after the meeting to provide an update on what was discussed. No specific details were released about the conversations.
The parade will take place two days after the 80th anniversary of Nazi Socialist party leaders, including Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, who took over after Adolf Hitler and his top allies took their own lives as American and Russian forces surrounded and laid siege to the city of Berlin, signed the unconditional surrender document in front of Allied officials in Reims, France.
