STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — One of the Wausau-area men accused of beating Donald Mitchell Jr in a Stevens Point parking lot will serve 10 years in prison for reckless homicide.
Christian Emerson was sentenced Friday for his role in the incident, which began when he and two others were rummaging through Mitchell’s vehicle looking to steal items of value. When Mitchell confronted the group, they beat him and left him in the lot.
The 71-year-old was rushed to a Stevens Point hospital, then taken to Wausau, where he died from his injuries the next day.
The terms of his sentence also include 10 years on extended supervision, a mental health evaluation, and a full no-contact order with Mitchell’s family.
Three men were charged in connection with the incident. Emerson, 19, is the second to be sentenced.
Arlin Sangster was found guilty at trial last fall and began a 20-year prison sentence in December. The third defendant, Brandon Boehm, reached a plea deal with the state earlier this year for a lesser charge and will be sentenced in April. He faces up to 31 years in prison.
A fourth person was initially sought as a person of interest in the case, but they were later cleared of wrongdoing.
