WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) – The U.S. House of Representatives has finalized a vote to censure Texas Democrat Rep. Al Green after he interrupted President Trump during his joint address to Congress on Tuesday night.
According to the Post Millennial, the final vote tally was 224 to 198 and included ten Democrats who broke with their party to vote in favor of the measure, making Green the 28th member of Congress in U.S. history to be censured. House Democrats responded to the vote by singing the song “We Shall Overcome” on the House floor.
The censure comes after Green stood up and yelled during the president’s speech, accusing him without evidence of wanting to cut government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid and repeatedly stating that he “has no mandate!”
President Trump has stated on numerous occasions in recent weeks that he has no intention of signing a bill or directing his cabinet to make cuts to Medicare or Medicaid outside of looking for examples of what he calls “waste and fraud,” which would include non-citizens and other ineligible individuals receiving funds from the taxpayer-funded programs.
Green, who has a long history with the president, has attempted to impeach President Trump three times since he was first elected back in 2016, with the most recent threat of articles of impeachment being filed coming on Wednesday when he told reporters that the president is “unfit” for office due to his “34 felony convictions.”
During an interview with Fox News after the vote was taken, President Trump stated that Rep. Green “should be forced to pass an IQ test because he is a low IQ individual and we don’t need low IQ individuals in Congress.”
