NEW YORK, NY (WSAU) — Marquette took a 37-35 lead into halftime, but St. Johns exploded for 44 points in the second half en route to a 79-63 win in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals Friday night.
Kam Jones led the Golden Eagles with 24 points on 10-22 shooting. He also recorded seven rebounds and two assists.
Stevie Mitchell scored 11 in the losing effort.
The Red Storm had four starters in double figures led by Zuby Ejiofor, who had 33 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. RJ Luis Junior added 13 points.
Bench scoring wasn’t much of a factor for either club. Marquette got 11 points from three players, while St. John’s had just three points outside their starting five.
The Red Storm will play Creighton for the BIG EAST tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. One of a dozen automatic bids will be awarded on Saturday, with the Selection Show looming on Sunday.
