WESTON, WI (WSAU) — The D.C. Everest Gaming Club has announced an $8,715 donation to the Autism Society of Central Wisconsin.
The group was chosen as the benefactor of this year’s Evercon Charity Auction. Gaming Club Advisor Christian Ammon says it’s a group many in the club can relate to. “Some of our students are autistic so they are closely connected to this organization.”
The Charity Auction has raised over $65,000 for local groups since 2009. Ammon says the students do all the leg work of vetting and selecting a group starting in the fall. “They start with two weeks to find Central Wisconsin groups and their [causes]. Sometimes we will have a representative come in and tell us about [the group], and then we vote on it.”
Ammon says just like any other election the majority rules. Groups that didn’t make the cut this year can be reconsidered next year.
He hopes students learn the value of philanthropy through the process because the club itself operates on a small budget. “We want the kids to make giving to others a part of their lives. We could easily buy $8,000 worth of games, but we’re not going to do that.”
This year’s Evercon brought in more than 2,000 visitors from multiple states to enjoy games of all varieties both in a recreational and competitive setting. Other attractions included playable vintage home and cabinet video games, semi-professional wrestling, improv comedy groups, and music.
